2011 Best Picture Nominee Ranking - She Said....

Best Picture rankings according to Rae....

Black Swan
I was speechless after seeing this movie.  The acting was stunning and I was left constantly trying to figure out what was real and what was imagined.  The end brought it all together, but still kept you guessing.  While Portman isn’t my favorite actress, she deserves the award here.

The King’s Speech
This movie is tied with me for best picture.  While Black Swan is more artistic and edgy, the King’s Speech is a compelling story.  It could be categorized as the ‘feel good movie of the year’.  Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush do a phenomenal job of helping the audience get to know the characters and their relationship between the two men.

True Grit
I enjoyed the Cohen Brother’s rendition of this classic, although I was a little surprised at how true they were to the original (using much of the original dialog).  The modernization of the cinematography was well done, however I missed the great wide angle scenic shots that are so captivating in traditional westerns.

127 Hours
I dreaded the idea of seeing this movie.  Knowing the story, I wasn’t sure how I was going to enjoy a movie about a guy trapped who has to cut off his arm.  I was pleasantly surprised at the movie.  It was an emotional journey about a man on the brink of life and death, facing his inner demons.  James Franco deserves the best actor award for his solo performance in this film.

The Kids are Alright
I loved this movie for the modern depiction of a family struggling with the day to day of life.  The movie was real and thought provoking.  I thought both Annette Benning and Julianne Moore deserved a best actress nomination for their work in this film.

Social Network
I wasn’t as compelled by this movie as everyone else seemed to be.  While I thought they told the story well, from flashing between present day depositions to how it all began, I felt that the characters lacked any redeeming qualities.  Aside from being a story relevant to the times, I left the film wondering why I should care about how Facebook was invented.

Winters Bone
I knew the least about this movie going into but was surprised at the films ability to capture my attention throughout the entire two hours.  Jennifer Lawrence’s character had me emotionally involved from beginning to end.  A chilling, yet captivating story.

The Fighter
While I liked this movie, I couldn’t help but feeling it had been done before.  The story of a boxer torn between doing what’s right for himself and family loyalty - it’s an enjoyable story.  The acting is superb, and true to the hype, Christian Bale deserves the Supporting Actor nomination, and in my opinion the win.

Inception
This was a great summer thriller, captivating and suspenseful.  The films unique premise of corporate espionage thru dreams was fascinating.  I loved how the movie kept the audience guessing about the current job as well as the past that was haunting DiCaprio’s character.  While not a ‘best picture’, in my opinion, this was still a great action/thriller movie.

Toy Story 3
Who doesn’t love the Toy Story movies?  Always a great story full of excitement and nostalgia, you fall in love with Woody, Buzz and the rest of Andy’s toy box.  During the majority of this movie it felt like the other two installments of Toy Story…that is until the end.  I left the movie in tears and thinking of the fates of all the toys I have outgrown throughout the years.  Very well done for Disney/Pixar…and true to form, they leave you wondering if this truly will be the last Toy Story.
